Actual Play - TimeWatch - The Gadget - Episode 1

[00:00:00] Hello, welcome to the Roleplaying Exchange. This is Adam and tonight we are going to be playing TimeWatch. The scenario is called the Gadget and this is something that I was kind of hoping to run the

[00:00:14] campaign of Behind the Enemy Times and this is our introduction scenario to it. So hopefully we'll be able to play several more of these but in true RPX fashion I'll probably release this on Patreon because we all just kind of meh off but

[00:00:28] Anyway, let's go ahead and introduce ourselves and our characters starting with our good buddy Aaron. Hi, I'm Aaron and I'm playing Detective Rick Baker a police officer from 19th or the police detective Excuse me from 1975. Awesome man. Do you recall what was his introduction to TimeWatch?

[00:00:52] I don't as a matter of fact. I don't think we ever agreed upon one. I think you actually made up one the last time but I don't remember it

[00:00:59] But I was hoping somebody else would be able to catch you on your bullshit. But okay good way to join it Not this time All right next I am Ethan and I am going to be returning as Albert Silverback gorilla from 1985 alternate 1985 I

[00:01:24] vaguely recall I am a former enemy of TimeWatch Came in out of the cold. Yeah, you're a russian super star gorilla Oh, yeah gave it all up gave it up damn it

[00:01:40] Crack team we got here and the cherry on top of this team. Oh, uh, I suppose that would be me I'm Joe And my character is Thor fan regalio He is a an agent of removal from the 31st century. He's he's an assassin

[00:01:59] Oh, that's a very church-drop way to say assassin Well, 31st century is a noble and Elegant place assassin is such a ghost word for Problems defined and delicate like we are Right exactly. Nice. And you know, you see in one of these games of TimeWatch

[00:02:29] We would be beginning in TimeWatch Citadel, which is outside of time and space in a time that it's just before the big bang But that's not how we're doing it this time. This time we're going to begin in media res

[00:02:42] So you were quickly scrambled by your handler, which is habesha the greek mathematician And you were told that you had to get to 1945 God Los goddamn it. I'll find the name of it in a second Los Alamos No

[00:03:01] Well, you're going to 1945 new mexico because there has been a report Of a woolly mammoth that is on the loose and reek in destruction and nearby town That sounds preposterous So They're kind of work

[00:03:18] They were kind of working on things on their end, but you're going out right now To see what kind of damage Control you can do so obviously, you know, this thing is being seen

[00:03:28] And you're going to have to go ahead and a remove the threat somehow and then b You're going to have to remove everyone's memory of this event in any fashion you can You know and guarantee that the atomic bomb is still invented and used Yeah

[00:03:48] quite so yeah, so boom you This is something that the creator when I when I played this game with Kevin colt kind of did and I like you know, let's see what everybody says

[00:04:01] So when you time travel, what exactly does it look like for you? Like how do you envision this scene? Aaron um It's like getting off a subway train and doing a new time Okay So you pretty much get your tether. You just activate it

[00:04:20] And even in your mind's eye there's a door or like two doors slide open You step through it and then boom you're there. Okay. That's kind of vanilla. We'll go with that I guess Let's do it Ethan how does Albert see this?

[00:04:38] I think he probably like slowly from black Like his vision fades into the uh, the area he's traveling to and then as he's traveling Like either forwards or backwards He sees like all the changes happening around him until he hits the time he's supposed to be and bam

[00:04:58] That's really nice. That is not vanilla in the least. Why thank you adam It's christ. Oh, why I don't know what I would have done if you said that was Nope, you'll never mean something like that on your own podcast

[00:05:15] Now what does Thor is it Thor fan? Is that how you pronounce it? Thor fan. Yeah, Thor fan. How does Thor fan see time travel? uh Thor fan Thinks it's like stepping out of a worm bath

[00:05:30] Like just very slowly sort of emerging from worm depths worm depths up into the cold reality of Uh, the new time and then it just like pops like a bubble and suddenly he's there. Okay. Awesome That was not vanilla either Aaron. I'm sorry. I just Know, right

[00:05:52] You'll see You'll regret it. You'll regret it once I actually actually get a chance to cause trouble for you in this game You son of a bitch Buddy what i'm gonna say in this game, but Yeah, maybe it was he was just like preemptively at least getting something

[00:06:08] Yeah before the trouble happened That's fair I gotta give you some sense of indication. So you are arriving in uh Tolerosa, New Mexico, which is you know east of the white sands and you're like The way it works is when you do the time travel deal

[00:06:26] Like the computers figure out where there's nobody at at a moment and they will put you there. So You all materialize in a Wool's worth. It's like so old time. Well, it's not old time. He's super old timey But an odor department store kind of set up

[00:06:44] You do notice that the the glass in the front for the display windows have been broken out you Can hear gunfire going off in the distance There's a smell smoke in the air an occasional scream here and there and uh, what do you do? Oh

[00:07:02] I guess uh, probably probably make my way towards the smoke Okay, so presumably the running and the screaming and the smoke they're running from that Okay, and how are you appearing to everyone in this time period by the way?

[00:07:18] So you've got your your mash on which you know unless you do something Totally bizarre that breaks the illusion. They're not seeing a silverback grill. They were seeing a watt Uh, what time period is it did you say 45? Thank you 45. Okay. Um, probably like a guy in a

[00:07:39] It's kind of like a basic suit like a tan suit. He's got like a big gray silver Big gray like handlebar mustache. Okay And I had on sounds good Uh gentlemen, what about your characters? What are you doing? You just seen Albert take off

[00:07:54] I'll follow the girl seems to know what he's doing although uh to my mind Lee Madness not commonly known to start fires No, do you actually with you mentioning that do you um, do you happen to have like history ancient?

[00:08:11] It's a skill and you're not I did not choose that Okay, that's fine. Well you did come from 30 for centuries. Nothing before the 31st century was of any import Nothing cool happened until like the 29th century Now

[00:08:27] Okay, Aaron, I assume that rick baker is doing the same. Yes, I will also follow but I will also light a cigarette while following It's so nice being out time on citadel because they kind of frown on that but you like your

[00:08:43] Hell, these are doctors prescribed cigarettes in 45 And the latest cigarette on the citadel Not supposed to get a frown on it So Yes, you all make it out of the store. It's kind of getting trouble or anything. They're like do that is like so bad for you

[00:09:02] What are you doing? I mean you're almost damn near immortal anyway, but We don't want to hear you take care of yourself really, you know, I mean I don't want to hear you coughing for 20 years anyway, so This is a very kind of

[00:09:20] Toros, uh, you know kind of a smaller town just You're actually on the main street drag You can kind of see it, you know some buildings that indicate there's something Behind where the department store was and you can kind of see some

[00:09:33] Other structures on the other side across the other side of the street past the you know primary buildings you would see So not huge But you know enough of a place to call like for a woolly mammoth to cause harm and yeah, you

[00:09:48] Make it out. You see that if I go left I can see upturn cars and stuff like that and yeah, you see Cars have been knocked over you see Buildings have been like the masonry knocked off the side of it

[00:10:02] And you see in a courtyard square by what looks like the courthouse with the You know how they all try to do that roman kind of

[00:10:11] Pillars and stuff like that for blah blah blah in one of those kind of areas you do see an ellop like a large woolly mammoth It is Kind of pacing around in a circle. It's hitting stuff. It's already knocked over a statue and

[00:10:26] Every once in a while you see somebody Lean out the window with looks like a hunting rifle crack off a shot They lean back in and then the mammoth charges over to that building and starts

[00:10:42] Ramming it with his tusk and you know a wall starts to cave in Doesn't look like that building can do too much more Then there's a bubba across from another building that

[00:10:54] Cleans out cracks a shot. So yeah, and then he ran the woolly mammoth run over to that building so this is the point of the game where Of course You can get base information if you wanted to call upon a skill

[00:11:08] And in some instances where it's a bit more than like a precursor area knowledge of stuff It will require a spend so What does everyone want to do? What state of How much more mammoth impacts can this building suffer before it goes down?

[00:11:25] They do have a point in architecture. I prefer not to spend it though. Okay with a no, that's fine With your basic knowledge of architecture You can tell that basically one whole wall has been decimated

[00:11:38] So if the mammoth hit it harder and definitely stepped into the building then You know, it would collapse possibly killing the mammoth itself But yeah, so the other building isn't doing so bad But I consider two guys

[00:11:55] Shooting at it the one that it has turned and went to is hit the building. It looks like it could take a few more to more better built structure So you mentioned ancient history before I actually have two in ancient history with ancient history

[00:12:11] You do know that mammoths originate in From the Pilsen to the Holocene era What you're definitely looking at is a fresh mammoth. This is straight out of That time period it does not appear to be cloned It does not appear to be thawed out of any sorts. So

[00:12:33] Yeah, this looks like somehow something from the Holocene. I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly Holocene, Holocene, excuse me, but the southern accent negates all mispronunciations But yeah, you do like you get the impression that this thing is straight out of history

[00:12:52] And do I see any like specific spot it might have materialized at like did it just pop in here? Did it come here from elsewhere? Is there a trail? What would you uh, what would you look for a trail with?

[00:13:06] I'm glad you asked Adam. Uh, let's see perhaps, uh It wears it Nope, it's not over there. So that's what that would help you with time travel. Oh, okay. Well, yes, I could use

[00:13:18] Is that your autocrom? I do have notice. I thought there was just like a search or something Well, you know, we play so many gum shoe games. I don't believe there's a straight up Search maybe that's under general abilities

[00:13:33] But what I would actually accept is if you would um, I'll give you something for time craft And if you will give me a time craft spin, I will give you something more. Yeah time craft there Okay, um Yeah, I'll spend one

[00:13:46] Okay, so what you're picking up here and like this is the thing that I absolutely love about this game Like there is like so many different angles on this So with time craft like off hand You do like your autocom is picking up See chrono radiation

[00:14:05] Radiating from this creature. So yes, it has obviously went through time now with the point spin I will say that you have actually your you've got your Autocon to actually like you picked up the trail like it is a la red dead redemption too

[00:14:21] To where you're hunting the animal and you have the Like the scent looking stuff in the area. You get what I'm saying. Yeah So yeah, you can actually if you wanted to you could tell where this is from Rick, do you

[00:14:35] Have anything that you would like to do or would you like to interact with this knowledge? Uh, uh, I'm first. I'm going to shoot at the mammoth to keep it to get its attention So that it does not destroy the building. What are you shooting?

[00:14:50] Hopefully an elephant gun I am shooting a gun that looks like a 1975 issue police revolver now this is those don't exist yet. So Oh Okay. Now here's the bait like and I just want to make this clear as well too

[00:15:14] Uh, you know, it's been a while and you know, we play so many different games and stuff like that Yeah, me for something like that fits your character. Yeah You have a 45 1911. That's what you said, right? Uh, yeah, I said whatever whatever the

[00:15:31] 1975 standard issue police weapons. Well if my knowledge of Magnum pi is anything which is the 80s, but close enough I would say yeah, 19 for a 1911 would sound like a nice big uh caliber round weapon and that would be

[00:15:53] You know, this thing's pretty big. But anyway, I also want to point this out to you to you all Uh, you know, we have time travel But we also have preparedness and stuff like that. So if like say for example, you wanted an elephant gun

[00:16:07] You could you know murder this thing No, no, I just want to get its attention But yeah, I'm gonna get like that would be basically your gun Since gumshoe doesn't go into straight up gun porn and stuff like that. That would be a

[00:16:23] Plus uh one on whatever you wrote All right, let's see what my skills are to figure out what I am in fact rolling Uh Now I want to ask you this real quick too. Like what is the What is the ultimate goal for this? So you're

[00:16:40] shooting something that is big with a pistol like are you What's the big picture here? Like I said, I'm just trying to keep it from bringing that building down. Okay. I'm gonna divert its attention Also, I have seven in shooting so okay And I rolled a five

[00:17:01] A five well this thing right here. It's hit threshold was a four So yeah, so you wrote a five and um row damage Alrighty That's a three. That's a four with a plus one to that

[00:17:16] So yeah, you have just did four damage to the woolly mammoth. You shot that right in the ass And it takes note A new challenger has appeared Come on I say someone appears to have shot me in the ass

[00:17:35] And you save my pdf real quick like I've got like a neat little program here where I just like make Silas, okay, so yeah, so here's I probably I'm gonna give you all this like typically when we do uh combat and time watch. It's a

[00:17:53] Serpentine kind of deal now since you all had the initiative you started first and this thing is turning around I will say that you Also can go again. Now. Here's the thing Whoever goes last Goes first Does that make sense? Yes. No twice good

[00:18:17] That's not how I would Guard it, but sure I think i'm adding a new wrinkle to rick's characterization. He's got a death wish He tried to kill albert Yes Not what they usually mean by death wish He wishes for someone else's death So

[00:18:41] All right, you all have a lot of different options here This thing is I will tell you right now I do have points to spend and athletics to do and stuff like that

[00:18:50] So I am how uh, how far would it be to chase to get this thing to chase us out of ice site? You know smaller town I'd say that it's it looks like a quarter of a mile that if you like turned around and you know

[00:19:06] You took it Had it go a quarter of a mile out it would be out of town so to speak. So it's a little distance, but You also have time travel. Oh, yeah, I forgot I've got him. I had to remember this

[00:19:20] So will you all each start with one bennie? so there's many there's many benefits to the bennies and I want to encourage you all to give each other bennies

[00:19:29] I think the max that any person can have in a time watch game is three bennies. So, you know, typically Like a moment of good role playing then, you know, there's great space for like five of them

[00:19:41] There's five. Okay. Five in I'd have to double. I'm not looking at the characters No, it's five sounds good to me and you could there's many different benefits to I gotta say five You can spend one to get a general ability refresh of two points

[00:19:57] Typically what we use them for is that like say for example, and I'm not telling you what to do here, joe But one of your options would be, you know, you've got a quarter of a mile to make it That's gonna suck but you can time travel

[00:20:10] Like leapfrog it if you wanted to and still be within its line of sight But that's gonna require time test now with the bennie you would You pay the stitch and you don't have to automatically get it. Otherwise, you're growing and then if you fail

[00:20:26] It's gonna mess with your chrono stability And you know, you can also spend chrono stability like you spend sanity, but I'm sorry for All right. So yeah, you about a quarter mile, which I'm also thinking That uh, I'm not sure we can send this thing back in time

[00:20:45] In case it happens to get discovered by some Enterprising archaeologists or yeah, and they discovered that hey this woolly mammoth has been shot with bullets That's a good point because then we got to go back in time and or and kill that archaeologist

[00:21:05] And then he's been shot with lasers Aaron you had mem tags Where you just walk up to somebody like shock them and put a little sticker on them and in Like they will them into time watch headquarters

[00:21:20] Fungal their brain and load them out. You don't have to just go no pop Wait, we're like mem tag this uh, woolly mammoth get them bullets out of it All right, so so you want to you want us to have the woolly mammoth chases for

[00:21:36] About a thousand plus yards Out of town. Yeah, well, that's that's not right That's wild Regardless You want us to have this woolly mammoth chase us a while and knock it out Mem tag it perform surgery and return it to the wild

[00:21:59] Seems like the humane thing to do Don't listen to the gorilla. He's an idealist I like this casual conversation when the woolly mammoth's just bearing down on you're like Rick is smoking a cigarette Okay Maybe if we can lure it back to where it where it originally

[00:22:22] Appeared well, let's start on that and then we could make further decisions as we go along All right I'm gonna ask for an action now. What are you doing? Run run? Okay, so Yep, uh, do you uh, I guess that'd be athletics I'll say it's a difficulty Ah

[00:22:50] There's some debris and stuff like that So with with a athletics point spend you can kind of maneuver around in a path that would also Hamper the mammoth's pursuit of you if you so wanted to Uh, I think I do want to

[00:23:06] I do not want to be gored upon a woolly mammoth. Um My damage modifiers fucking crazy by the way, I imagine it is All right I'm gonna spend two points of athletics. Okay put me down at four who is a leisurely sort of fella

[00:23:24] I rolled a four for a total of six Okay, so yeah you at least you're gonna be in the clear when this son of a bitch gets here Solid Okay, so Albert you have um, you know, you're seeing I'm most calling Teflon. What was his name again?

[00:23:44] Thor fan Thor fan. I don't know why I said Teflon Thor fan takeoff rick standing there They could get the who's murder hard on Yeah, I would uh, I would also like to run the direction that I that I see the uh red dead trail

[00:24:03] I'm gonna look at rick like I think you've got its attention Smoke a cigarette good. Well, that was dramatic by I will spend one okay, do I need to roll anything or yeah? Uh six total. Okay. Yeah like with your added abilities

[00:24:27] I mean you're leaping over the overturned cars You could even if you wanted to scale a building and say fuck these guys, but yeah Uh That might be useful. Yeah, I will I will hop on a building. Okay now advantage point

[00:24:45] All right, so our now excuse me rick. What are you doing buddy? I hope Can I commandeer a vehicle of someone trying to drive by and get away those vehicles have already been like it's You know people you don't patiently wait. I will also

[00:25:03] I strand a civilian by the mammoth exactly Would anyone like a ride away from the dangerous animal? I will also run away. Uh, exactly like a coward Okay, uh, let's see where is athletics? Uh, I want someone to note for the record. I ran away bravely I

[00:25:29] Have nine in athletics And I rolled a three. Uh I'm gonna spin two to make it a five. I mean you typically spend before you know, that's right I forget you have to spend before you roll. All right, so I failed Okay now

[00:25:46] It's gonna get his back. All right So I'm kind of retconning a little bit what I'm doing since like I get two actions But I'm just gonna kind of let's see that my so, you know

[00:25:57] My action was typically my first action. I'm saying was technically took the second. You know, I was shot in the ass But let's see I am going to spin Three in athletics because I really want to get you mother fuckers and that's a nine

[00:26:10] So the first leg of my journey doing good And I guess I might have to break out chase rules here and yeah the second so yep

[00:26:19] What's a lot in the way of me getting from one side of there to the other so by the time rick stumbles away We'll say that I'm one spot behind you rick since I'm entering chase rules at this point in time You are

[00:26:33] Not, you know, I can't attack you but shit's looking grim Gotcha. I've got a plan. It's okay So who would like to act? Um, you guys can go if you want it's cool I Remember if I act last I act twice right so Probably want to insert like

[00:26:55] You know, if I were a smart man rick, I would say rick goes first You know what I was thinking there was a bold strategy You know what I will go first

[00:27:08] I'm going to try and jump through the window of a nearby building so as to take shelter in said building Okay, so you're already on my ass like I don't think I can outrun you You can also time travel

[00:27:27] That's right. I can time travel probably the William Ameth can't Probably that's true. But if he does we're fucked Yeah That feels like cheating though Well, okay, I would either accept multiple things if you had architecture

[00:27:43] I would say that you could spend that and dart into a a building that is Very structurally sound and then if you do not have architecture Then just want to row athletics and you know, I will say that you at least make it into a building and

[00:28:00] You know, it won't be able to sustain too much damage, but it'd be enough to get you out of this round Okay, I don't have architecture so I'm going to use athletics. I'm going to spin two. Okay Uh, let's see I rolled a one so that's a three

[00:28:17] okay well You really had a great idea. I mean you were leaping through that window And you really didn't notice that there was like a really thin kind of chicken wire Islating this glass Oh

[00:29:25] Like what are you particularly gonna like are you just trying to Stow it for a second or are you wanting to hit it with your Strifter what's it called? I'm no I want to I don't want to like like

[00:29:39] Beat the shit out of it. I want to jump jump on its back and try and like steer it away Maybe you know, uh, lean to one side on his fur and

[00:29:48] Okay, you know, I kind of like this. I mean in the future we're going to be bison riders So I was like, but I think I mean I'm a little right

[00:29:56] Mammoth riding too. So yeah, you know what? Why don't you put yourself down for a stitch like even if this fails I think it's beautiful. So yeah, you're trying to steer it away by jumping us back to save the man who is very racist towards you

[00:30:11] That's right. I choose to be the bigger man The bigger gorilla. So what would I say? I mean athletics would be good unless you have something else Outdoorsmen, I mean do you have anything you think could apply to that? I don't have I don't have like outdoor survival

[00:30:30] Um, I do have Intimidation you could do intimidation if you could do taunt you could do whatever. I mean you got a lot of option Just beat your chest at it, you know, like gorillas do. Yeah, I mean I I could do that's gonna scare it

[00:30:46] I guess scuffling would be wouldn't really apply. I guess I will I will take well, I would accept scuffling Yeah, okay So I mean you're you kind of see this going so yeah scuffling I will say this though

[00:30:59] I do get in my next action will be to try to buck you off if this succeeds that sounds logical Okay All right, uh spend a point of intimidation. I look at dead in the eye I

[00:31:15] Bend a point of scuffling so that'll be uh four four. Yeah, you take a big run leave It's big. I mean it's not like you're trying to hit a motorcycle Yeah, so yeah, you jump on his back and there right what it looks like please

[00:31:29] uh, so I like Galt full speed backwards and I run and jump towards it and I like catches fur and like Swing up onto it like you use the the fur as a fulcrum and like swing up

[00:31:44] Onto the neck of the thing and then I fall down the other side To like pull him away from that building Okay, because presumably he's bearing down on the building with baker in it. Yeah, right? Yeah. Yeah So baker you see all this

[00:31:59] But uh right I'm gonna do since you're kind of you've fulcrum your side from one side of its neck to the other Is going to try to like shake you off slash maybe run into a building

[00:32:11] I have no idea how to do this. So you say I'm gonna say that's coupling on my end. All right, so And that's a one Yeah, so yeah your gamble paid off you release out of a bitch Yeah, you're you're dangling from it right now by god like

[00:32:28] He got kind of tripped up in a light pole couldn't make it quite over there So yeah, good job. Shout down baker go I didn't need your help and I'll run off Wow Do you see gel? See what I have to put up with Thor fan

[00:32:49] What it be Thor fan, you know occasionally glancing over a shoulder sees that here's I didn't need your help Stop turns around it says Wow And then he's gonna attempt to kill this woolly man. Okay, whoa What are we using? Uh, I'm gonna spend a point of preparedness

[00:33:14] And let's see how many points have I got I've got six I can spend one And I'm going to have an elephant gun. Okay, so well it's it's been in a row

[00:33:24] Okay, so I will say you know pretty much the target number in gum shoe typically is a four four Yeah, all right for exactly barely No, you know, you think you think back and you're like thank god they said mammoth so yeah

[00:33:41] This uh very heavy duty gun. I'm going to treat it as a heavy assault rifle And that's basically you're getting a plus two. All right now if you get closer there's I think is How would I'm close enough? Okay

[00:33:57] I'm gonna spend three points of shooting and um, yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna blast this thing. All right Uh, I rolled a three plus three six Awesome, and let's go ahead and do that damage. Okay, yeah damage

[00:34:12] Five five so seven. Yeah, do some yeah, you definitely rocket. I am glad you didn't critically fail I wasn't really mentioning that Like a one would have been a different target you hit. Yeah

[00:34:29] So yeah, uh, yeah, you rock it right in the as it's trying to rub on its right side to knock Albert off you rockets left so boom and it's a sizable hunk of it comes out and um This year all turns again. So whoever wants to act next

[00:34:47] um I will go next And I will shoot at it again because apparently with his pop gun Kill the shit out of this thing Um, you're pretty fucking close to it. I do want to point that out

[00:35:03] Tell you what I'm also going to use a point of preparedness I now have an m16 Okay In 45 Yes Okay, I'm a time traveler I will also recruit that as a plus two if you get that All right, I just choose an rpg

[00:35:24] Because that's no fun. That doesn't require any skill. I don't have to aim that I'm pretty sure it would help though. Yeah I mean it would fire at your feet see what happens

[00:35:35] You don't even have to aim it the other problem is the gorilla is on the things back so So I will spend a point of preparedness Uh and that is a seven with my one Okay And now I'm going to shoot

[00:35:50] Okay, I also do want to point out to you guys that you can also Um, there's we there's bonuses to like college shots and stuff like that but there's increased difficulty Shooting stuff or hitting it. But yeah, go ahead row your damage Six

[00:36:07] Yeah, so you just put this pepper its entire right flank the I'm sure I'm sure you went full on that. Yeah. Yeah, okay. It bellows out in pain It lets it's torn in many directions. It doesn't know what to do
