Session 3: The Mermaid

(July 16, 2023)

A series of murders have come up out of Marystown in the past week. The Hunters are contacted when it becomes clear with the most recent deaths that something unnatural connects the various victims: savaged throat wounds and an incredible lack of blood. Is a prowling animal stalking around Marystown? Or is there something else in this seaside village just beneath the surface?

[00:01:00] Hi, welcome to One Less Die, a fifth edition The Secret World actual pay podcast. We are continuing our play test campaign of The Secret World, tabletop RPG, Monster Slayers League North, specifically with our crew, the Boyz. Or the boys. So, start speaking of the boys.

[00:02:02] He's an ex-con who got out of prison to assist with this. Like that's a work release program, I guess, technically. Maybe the Templars like saw the potential in you and just got you out. Yeah. He was in prison and he swallowed a pee and they were like,

[00:02:47] Hi, I'm Jacob Blackstone. I'm a magus. It's been almost a month since I cast this spell. Kind of actually, not too far off. I'm an Innsmouth alumni. Nice. Innsmouth represent. I was a four kid and I went there under a scholarship.

[00:03:09] And depending on the weather, I either wear a very traditional east coast Pico, or a bright yellow raincoat. So I know, like, I remember, Mary, you're a more, Marcell is from New Orleans. Yeah, but are you like, is, is, is John and Jake actually from Newfoundland?

[00:03:33] Or they just, you guys also like newcomers to the area. No, I was from, I was actually from on terrible. And then you moved out. You moved east, not to Newfoundland first, but you moved to, you went to Solomon Island. Or education.

[00:03:48] I went to Solomon Island for education. And then when I joined the Templars, they, they demanded I go here. Okay. What about John? It was a sketch one that was boring out there. That's why I turned over to Leather Corum. You lived in, you lived in Swiftwater.

[00:04:05] I stole a man as a tractor. And he watched me steal it for three days. It would be funny. It's like you were from Swift Current, I think is in sync. Is Swift Current in, in the sketch one? I don't remember.

[00:04:19] Because remember there's a Swift Current in out, out the prairies and then Swift Current in Newfoundland. Yeah. So basically you lived in Swift Current back out there.

[00:04:26] And then you found like, you had, when you got out of prison and they sent you, told you to head over to Newfoundland. He's like, Oh, there's a Swift Current here too. Yeah. So he moved to the same address, 123 Main Street. Yes. Yes, of course. Swift Current, Newfoundland.

[00:04:39] I like that actually. All right. So last game, the last mission. I just have one more point out. So let's go back to the death mechanic for this. Yes. Oh yeah. So when you die, you can take no points and just get back up into E6 around.

[00:05:01] We have updated, yeah. As written, that's how they decided to go with the resurrection mechanics for bees. Okay. So if Rob Forber was actually a bee, imagine if you will, he gets sniped on live TV, head explodes. He's done.

[00:05:18] 30 seconds later, he just gets back up and continues to press conference. And his body is completely regenerated. Like, it's like, huh, anyway, like I was saying, the green belts need to be cleared. He's pretty anti-Gaya. Yeah, he, yeah, why did Gaya choose him?

[00:05:38] She's got a sick sense of humor with that God machine. Anyway, yeah, so. Yes. So to our listeners at home, we are modifying the death rules because they're just not. It's just, it's really straight. Because like, so as written, if you'd listened to the last session, you'll hear

[00:06:03] our like hour long after like post-mortem of the session where we talk about this, but we realize like when you want to be dies, they have a chance of coming back in within

[00:06:14] the same round or within a round if they choose to choose to sacrifice one of their destiny points and choose a side in the void. Or they just wait like 2d6 rounds and come back normal, like as normal with no downside

[00:06:31] with no repercussions, which means that when you are dying and making your death saves, it's actually more time efficient for one of your teammates to bust a cap in your head. Yeah. And let you just respawn.

[00:06:48] That was an interesting conversation I had with the devs when I told them, yeah, so one of my friends was like, what if I just capped my friend rather than like heal them like so they come back in a couple rounds.

[00:06:59] Well, that's kind of psychotic but I was like, oh trust me, I would also have made that person roll like a will save because like that you're not going to get off easy just they just fell to the shadow by a point. Yeah, exactly.

[00:07:14] Yeah, I would almost give that like that'd be a penalty if you fail that will save. You should just take a point to the dark side. I feel like you should just get one regardless. There's no role for that. Yeah. Maybe we'll make that.

[00:07:25] And yeah, so basically like you can do that. So the way we've tweaked it in the setting moving forward, at least for this campaign and probably other campaigns around of this. So you choose luminance or shadow as normal to get back.

[00:07:41] So you sacrifice your destiny if you want to get back like in that in the same fight like within a round or so. And then if you reject the the the choice and your body is salvageable

[00:07:54] and that it's still it's able to be recovered by your friends in the battle or it's still like like it's still able to be like collected after the battle and such. It's 1d6 hours. Is it 26 hours? I believe so.

[00:08:11] Yeah, 1d6 per previous death in hours for your body to recover fully. If you're if you're if it's if the choice is rejected and your body is unsalagable basically misty you're just blood misted or it's completely like just it's not there. It's vaporized.

[00:08:29] It's 1d6 per death in days and the bee and their body and their stuff optional wakes up in a gartha at the center of the earth and needs to find a branch that portals back to the surface closest to where they want to go.

[00:08:48] So you'd have to find your way back to Newfoundland through one of the various like magic spots where Gaia Poe were gartha pokes through. Yep, so that's how we're going to treat it moving forward.

[00:09:03] So there is some actual risk to death because this way you could still fail your mission whereas the rules as written you could you getting back up until you win. Yeah, it this way for us it feels more like less like it's a video game

[00:09:21] and more like there's actually like a real world like consequence while still having the immortality kind of still having the resurrection ability. Yeah, so the way it is if the entire team is fighting a super hard enemy

[00:09:34] and team gets wiped one at a time then the monster just sitting there waiting for someone to come back up. They come up, bam spawn camp you're dead again. Yeah, no mind you when you come back you're fully like healed up and stuff. Yeah, that doesn't matter.

[00:09:50] It might matter now. But yeah, so that's what we're moving forward because like eight hit points is the same as one when the guy does a minimum of nine damage. So that last mission which was sort of mixed but mostly successful results

[00:10:10] was June I had set for June 11 and 12 of 2023. So it is now July 16th 2023 when you guys get the call by Jack your basically the groups handler in the monster slaying league of Newfoundland.

[00:10:29] And the boys are brought into the briefing room and Jack's there and he's got a dossier for you guys. It's like, all right boys, we got a we got a little bit of a pickle down in a small town called Marys town. We are contact within the RNC.

[00:10:57] Officer Wallace has sent us a series of murder or sent as a case that they are they're bumping up to us.

[00:11:08] As it's a series of murders in this town or in the surrounding area that no longer fits the bill for normal mundane police officers within the last week. As you thought you guys got like the look through the folder and dossier and stuff on the table.

[00:11:30] You guys all have a copy of it. And within the last week, four people in Marys town went missing with three of them being recovered out of the out of the harbor a few days later.

[00:11:44] And the fourth body being found on land, the wounds and cause of death seem to correlate between the victims.

[00:11:53] Yeah, and you guys have like a couple like fold again there's more pages of like with some photo photos and so that have been faxed over from from the cops. So we have one Fiona McAllum local 26 year old.

[00:12:09] She's from Harbor Bound, which is in the area taken or she was she went missing on Saturday night turned up on Tuesday. We have some information like some personal information you guys can can look into. There's George Miles construction worker 45 also Harbor bound.

[00:12:29] Oh, yeah, sorry, Harbor bound is the ones that were found in the harbor that the bodies were found in the harbor. Okay. So Fiona was from was lived in Marys town. George Miles was also was found in the harbor. He went missing on Monday turned up on Tuesday.

[00:12:49] He lived in Cupid's and was working in Marys town for contract work and was staying at the local motel, the Braxton Suites. Mike Fudge. He's a lawyer 55 found in the harbor. He was he went missing on Tuesday turned up Wednesday.

[00:13:09] He lives in Marys town retired his wife is still alive. Jasmine 49 James Pudster or Pudster is a teacher 34.

[00:13:24] This one was found on land and this is the one that brought the case to us as this high school teacher who died on or who was found on Friday or went missing on Friday, found on Saturday on land.

[00:13:42] All the previous victims had strange gashes on their upper torso and around their their throats, which the police originally thought was some kind of animal attack or maybe the sharks in the harbor.

[00:13:56] And but it was this one on land that really got us or that they got the cops to send our way. The same jugular ripped out of throats ripped out an amazing lack of blood, even for a land killing that there was no blood really on scene.

[00:14:15] So this is where things kind of got really strange for the cops and they sent it to us. Okay, so I think we pretty looking at it. It could be a number of creatures in the in the secret world.

[00:14:27] But I think we're all look we're all thinking of the one of the same creature. The Empire's good start. Indeed. Hey kids, today's word is exaguination. Yeah. So Can you spell exaguination? Because I can't.

[00:14:46] Officer Wallace is down there with with with the with some other cops just kind of doing some rounds of like investigation. They will be there for you to help you guys if you need anything from them.

[00:15:00] We've been we have some some credentials to effectively deputize you or make it seem like you guys are part of the the RNC. Okay.

[00:15:11] But yeah, you guys need to get your asses over to Maristown and see what is going on with the see see what's killing these people. And put a stake in it's heart if you have to. Okay. Well. Can we drive there?

[00:15:32] Yeah, you know, it's about three hours from St. John's. Okay. You guys actually like thinking back on it. You drove through Maristown on the way to fortune. It was basically on the way to that to the original to the last mission. Okay.

[00:15:48] Well then I guess we'll get to the red BW micro bus with shovels and rates and implement of destruction. And I think if you count all the bullets they are all are implements.

[00:15:59] So I got a question like so you guys have modified the the the the mastery machine with a what is it what exactly is now in it. This is now a roof mounted M2 Brown 50 BMG machine. Sealing. Sealing mounted. Sealing mounted. Sealing. You're right. So.

[00:16:18] Sealing mounted 50 BMG machine gun 200 round box capacity. 660 grain bullet traveling in excess of 2700 meters per second. Damn. That thing will blow your goddamn face in the next county.

[00:16:36] Now I just have to like how are you guys like when you guys open the lat doors like the sliding doors on the master machine.

[00:16:43] How do you guys like have like a box or some kind of like way of like concealing that so like like somebody doesn't like look it is like what are you guys getting out like. It's a giant mounted gun. There's a tall cardboard box always there.

[00:16:56] It's a false ceiling. It looks like we got shag carpet on the ceiling. But you pull that down and then you can pull the machine gun down and you have a very limited arc of fire.

[00:17:07] You only got about 30 degrees at the back doors but in that 30 degrees you can put an ungodly amount of hurt. That's 30 degrees pain right there. I got. Yeah. After the last encounter you guys are like we're not we're not pulling our punches. No.

[00:17:27] We are going to be the A team. All right. Any other questions as you guys are like before you guys are about to head out though like do you have any questions you want to ask Jack about the situation?

[00:17:49] Or me as a GM like as you're looking through the dossiers and stuff because I have information about all the victims. I have some fair amount of information I've gathered from them so. Okay. Okay. Looking over the victim profiles is there anything they all have in common?

[00:18:05] They all lived in and around Maristown. Like Fiona she was a local punk. She lived in Maristown attending Kyan College had several close friends that the cops have contacted George Miles.

[00:18:27] Lived in Cupid's but then moved to or was moving it was in Maristown temporarily like living there for contract work with one of the local construction sites and is staying was staying at the local motel of the Braxton sweets.

[00:18:43] Like fudge lived in Maristown he retired his wife is still alive Jasmine and the cops have talked to her or have had some of his most tastes very good. Jasmine fudge James Pettister was a lives in Maristown. He taught at the Central High School. So, yeah.

[00:19:13] Yeah that's like the school like you talk go to Central High School talk to like see if we can find from this his his former students or even like the principal and so that but where it was going or even you check out this his apartment.

[00:19:28] That kind of stuff. I'll just scroll through the insta. Yeah. Doesn't seem to be any particular commonality among the victims. Not particularly. At least not that we can see on the surface. Yeah. What are the age differences? Fiona was 26. George was 45. Mike was 55. James was 34.

[00:19:55] So pretty about this about like we had college waitings all the way retirees. No commonalities of gender, age, income status. Ethnicity? Are they all the same? They're all white bread. But it's their East Coast. Yeah, they're all Irish descent. Yeah, I'm just trying to find anything.

[00:20:19] Yeah, I know. Straws here. If somebody ate the only four black guys in Tangerine. I guess the monster we're after is dressed as a spooky ghost. I wasn't going to go with that.

[00:20:34] I was going to go with like clearly it's a South African diplomat who turned vampire lord. Trying just can't get over apartheid. Okay, all right. No, I don't think we have any other questions at this time. All right.

[00:20:58] Okay, then you all hop into the Mastery Machine, take the ferry across from Bell Island to the mainland and then three hours later you're traveling into Marystown. That's a quickly load up a new group of maps for Marystown. So yeah, it's June or it's July 16th.

[00:21:26] So it's a Monday when you guys get the call and come in for this. There is a Tim Hortons in Marystown. There's also a subway. Okay, let's just take the subway to get there. God damn you. So yeah. I'm really not sure why I have friends.

[00:21:56] It's a mystery to us all. So yeah, once you guys get into Marystown where do you guys want to try? Where do you want to go first? Well, since we had two victims that were staying at the one motel. One victim. Oh, I thought there was two.

[00:22:14] No, there's one victim at the motel. Everyone else lived in or around Marystown. I think I had Fiona. No, no, they all lived in and around. Oh, yeah, they're all in Marystown.

[00:22:29] Actually, as you guys are traveling or coming in to town, you guys get a call from Jack. So who's picking up the phone? Who's answering the phone? Talk to me. About right there, Jake. Is it Jake? Yeah, bye. Ah yes, Jake.

[00:22:51] Well, we've got some good news or bad news depending on how you want to take it. We've got another death or... No, no, another missing person by the officer Wallace has notified us of. Hi? Sean Byron, deputy mayor of Marystown.

[00:23:13] Forty-three years old and lived in Creston, the D'Alone. Creston? Yes, it's just one of the outskirt villages around Marystown. First one not in Marystown though. I mean, it's all kind of Marystown. It's all neighborhoods connecting to Marystown. How it really is basically just Toronto.

[00:23:40] I'd say more like how like... Springwater is like... Berry. Berry, yeah, that's basically what it is. Okay. Yeah. Or like how some people think Wasegw beach is a really... Or not Wasegw, Wasego is what I'm talking about. I'm confused, Wasegw and Wasegw beach.

[00:24:02] Yeah, it's like how people think Wasegw is, is a really... Just because it's on the same stretch of Lake Coast or Lake Shore. I guess. Kinda. So we have a last known location for this guy? From what I understand he was in his house last night.

[00:24:27] And never came to work this morning and then when somebody went to check on him in the afternoon, or around noon, they found his door wide open. Well if he's missing then we could try to track him.

[00:24:42] But that's good to investigate. They have his first to see if we can figure out where he went. Okay. Since he still could be walking around. His car is also missing. You even make a model subscription? Yeah, they give you one.

[00:27:28] It's sort of a little development. Or it's like a nice development. Fairly new buildings and new houses. And yeah, why don't you guys roll the investigation? Just relax. Also there is a cop car or an RNC car nearby. They're putting up tape. The scene is still cordoned? Yeah.

[00:30:11] Like they're shifted over as if somebody hit the wall and knocked them inside. Is there anything appear to be missing? Nothing appears to be missing. Are your TVs still there? Yeah. What did you get for your investigation? I didn't get a role in the investigation.

[00:31:25] And you think you also see some scuff marks or even some scratching in the floor. I'll have a look at this. Cool, we're going to take a look. What do these gouges look like? They look like fingernails. Like human fingernails? Yeah, they look like human fingernails.

[00:31:54] Just the one pair of scratch marks? Yeah, the one second. Does it appear as though the scratch marks are leading towards the door or in from it? I think they're going out. The person was being dragged out of the house.

[00:32:11] What you surmise from the scene is the rug, in the scuffle the rug got thrown halfway down the hallway. Probably if the guy was down there because that's where the nails start. And he was being dragged down the whole back to the front door.

[00:32:26] Okay, that's not a good sign. Any blood? No. There's a little bit of blood on a corner of a table, but that's about it. Okay. Are there any marks around the door for you? Like for the front door on the outside?

[00:32:46] Yeah, there's probably some markings of where it looks like somebody tried to hold onto it tightly. You see some fingerprints even in the light on the door frame. It seems like the action happened right here. I guess I'll collect those fingerprints and have somebody run them.

[00:34:52] So that when we're ooting a boot if I turn back into one and I pick up the scent I can pick up the trail. Yeah, so you get that whiff of the trail. Okay. All right.

[00:35:01] And then I will take a sniffer on the house for anything like weird that stands out. Oh, okay. You got an 18 you said? Yeah. Smell Grave-Turt. Okay. Yeah, you smell deaf and Grave-Turt. All right. Then I will... is there a kitchen with an island?

[00:35:29] Yeah, yeah, it's a nice kitchenette. I'm going to walk through the kitchen and behind the island and then stand up from behind the island as a people. Okay. Nice. [00:35:54] I'd like to go upstairs or check the bedrooms and whatnot and see if there's any indication of what he's been doing. Okay. Where he's been going. Yeah, roll an investigation on that for your searching around and such. 18. Okay.

[00:36:16] Yeah, you see again it's a pretty bachelor's sort of home. Looks like he's got some paperwork and stuff for the town. Like for the town work and stuff in a den.

[00:36:37] But you do actually find in and around some of his like... where like he keeps some of his private affairs and stuff. You find a checkbook and there's a half torn, like a page like half torn from it. It's got a M-E-R in the person's center. Yeah.

[00:37:08] Oh actually I'm looking in there. Sorry, you have a... it's a DZI in the under the person's... ATQ. No, DZI under the name for the person that it would be given to. Was it a partial name? It was just a partial name.

[00:37:30] It's like he ripped it out but he ripped it out really rough. Like just a get out. And he didn't care about how it was. Can I check the ledger of the checkbook to see where that check might have gone and what the amount was? Sure.
