ADR - Episode 626: Aberration Series - S

[00:00:35] S. Since the Aberration Series is... Goddamn it. The Aberration Series ssssss. Mm-hmm. Yeah, so we're covering the S tier of the Aberration Series. Hell yeah. Oh no, yeah. We're covering Aberration Series s by MMPrat99. This is the latest one. It's the last one right now.

I am going to recommend it. Well, leave it at a partial. Okay. Okay. I, I, I sense I might know why, but like, we'll see. You'll never know. Yeah.

[00:01:59] You're not going to tell me. No, never. You're just going to cuck me the entire time. No, you'd be way into that. Yeah. Whoa. Don't King Chain. Yeah. Fair. Secondly, you don't know me. Yeah. I mean, you say that. Yeah. But yeah, no, we'll, we'll see how, how we'll see why we gave those initial recommendations as we go into the discussion.

[00:02:28] But before that, we start, we'll start with the rundown. So this story, much like the other apparition series are done sections, usually like each section representing an alphabetical letter, like a B, C, D, whatever. This one is all S's. So we're going to start with S is for speculation, which is a series of newspaper articles post Halloween 2013, which up until this point, as far as we know, has been the present day of the series,

[00:02:59] detailing the events of an investigation into a missing or into the missing fair, the missing person's case. And the disappearance of one Todd Winokur and suspicion of Elia Ashburn, her son, Sully and his friend, Adora in the missing persons case.

[00:03:27] We then move on to S is for statements, which is a transcript of the Hogan's Gap police department, and interviewing Elia with Detective Ramirez as the interviewer. She basically claims that things were fine on her end of things, and that Sully and Adora went out trick or treating as usual, and they came home at the regular time, watched a scary movie. And then Adora was picked up from her by her mom just in time for the local

[00:03:55] curfew to start. Then we get S is for second interview, which gets, uh, which is Sully's interrogation and interview with Ramirez. And things go a bit more pear shaped than what his mother was supposedly aware of. A little bit. Yeah. Sully and Adora did in fact go trick or treating, but they had a run in with Todd. Nothing too serious. Just like they saw him out there and they like, I think, exchanged

[00:04:24] a greeting. Um, at first they simply spotted him and, uh, and his friends going around. Todd was in a silly fluffy rabbit costume, apparently in defiance of his parents shutting down his Halloween party because he's, he splurged on the credit card. Um, and when he got grounded about it, like Todd basically like, Oh, you can't, you can't, uh, tell me what to do and basically dressed up in like a weird flamboyant bunny costume and started

[00:04:50] like just prancing around outside. Um, in protest, literally in protest. Yeah. No, that's basically it. Yeah. Um, you're missing a key descriptor there. It's a Mecca bunny. Yes. Yeah. Yes. It's a, it's a costume based off of some like cartoon character from a, from a movie. Um, uh, I'll get to that in my actual thoughts. I actually have some notes on

[00:05:13] that, but, um, Adora and Sully then met some friends, talked, uh, for quite a while, did some more trick or treating. And then while heading by the Phelan Park bridge, they spotted Todd in his outfit again alone and under a streetlight staring at the sky, very still and everything was suddenly quiet. When they investigated to see if he was all right, things

[00:05:43] turned terrifying as he started acting very freaky and dangerous in the costume. Uh, they fled with Todd seemingly like right behind them. Um, when they looked back, he was gone, but the strange shadow form that, uh, was around him when he was under the streetlight was still there. And then it turned into this horrible, this, this, this, this horrible and then turn

[00:06:08] into this. Yeah. Horrible. Wasn't that in, that was in the hobby of the headland, wasn't it? Yeah. I think it was. Yeah. Yeah. Then it turned into this horrible, awful, amorphous shadow thing that chased them further. Um, sandblasting both of them seemingly. Um, they managed to escape back to a busy street where Halloween goers were, uh, but no one seemed to notice their freaked out situation or, um, like their calls for help because it's Halloween. Like

[00:06:38] they're supposed to be acting like weird and scared and it's like a prank probably. Um, they headed back to Elliot's hearth. Um, but not before encountering the trailing shadow thing again, this time with more creeping fog, Adora and Sully couldn't transform as well as the whole time. They like, they were stuck in their humanoid forms or their anthro forms. Um, so Adora

[00:07:01] summoned some Grimalkin beasts to their defense as quickly as it had come upon them. The fog and shadows fled the end and scared beyond reason. They made it home and used a scary movie as cover for their fear, not thinking that anyone would believe what they had seen or what happened to Todd. The next day they returned to the bridge and at the old founder's Oak nearby, they could

[00:07:30] sense and smell something wrong, possibly the remains of Todd within the hollow of the Oak tree. All this was spilled out to detective Ramirez over a bag of cracked pistachios, uh, who then assured a now shaken Sully that they would look into this and that he wasn't alone when it came to encountering dark and twisted things. Uh, Ramirez himself had encountered terrifying things

[00:07:57] when he was younger living in Curtisville, including a strange sack that showed up in the family shed. He then released Sully with a bag of iron shavings and salt for protection, telling him to go straight home. Then we get to S is for street gossip. Sully leaves the police precinct and bumps into Bill,

[00:08:20] who tells him that Lee Kimura and her sister, Mai got sick from some dangerous gummy candies that were going around last night on Halloween. Sully then realized, uh, he had actually seen my filching candy from Todd's bag last night and that these candies were likely meant to harm Todd and his friends with many other kids getting caught in the crossfire.

[00:08:49] Finn for now. So yeah, that was, uh, the aberration series S in a nutshell in a pistachio shell, as it were. Uh, you'll find out why that's mentioned if you read the story and in our notes, because I've got a note on that. It's very nice of that nut reference. Thank you. It seemed appropriate. Yes. But, uh, without further ado, I suppose we'll move on to everyone

[00:09:17] tolerates the grammar musicians at this point. Uh, unless you skipped ahead, uh, with, uh, when, when future me, uh, puts in a note, if this one goes too long, which I've done now. Yeah. When this one goes too long. Thank you for grammar. But yeah, I'm going to start with, uh, S is for speculation. Um, the first clue came with a string of baffling culinary theft from weekly market stalls to various specialty stores

[00:09:46] in the Hogan's gap area. So very long sentence, but the, the, the actual like issue here is very early on is, um, it should be, uh, culinary thefts, not culinary theft. Cause it was like multiple thefts, uh, various like market stalls and, and specialty shops. So. Oh yeah, true. Uh, the next one, just a few crumbs, just a few crumbs, a small market basket

[00:10:15] and a faint smell of damp earth and some wild snowberries were the only clues left behind. So I feel like there should be only one and instance. And like at the very end of the listing, like, uh, so it says like just a few crumbs, a small basket or a small market basket, a faint

[00:10:37] smell of damp earth and some wild snow, a snow drop berries. Uh, the next one here, um, is police are working hard to unravel the mystery and Todd's parents, the Winokur have been understandably frantic. Uh, so this one, I feel like a Winokur, uh, Winokurs should have an S at the end since it's the Winokurs, like it's a family name, like it's a great, it's the, it's the,

[00:11:03] the parents basically. So the family, so yeah, plural. Um, the next one, police confirm that she voluntarily agreed to an interview stating that she has always cooperated full with investigations. I feel like full should actually be fully, like she always, she has always cooperated fully with investigations. Yeah. Yeah. That is all I have for S is for speculation. So are

[00:11:29] we going to go down each section, uh, for this and with like actual thoughts and such? Might as well. Okay. So then Mikey, the sense for evil, what do you have for S is for speculation? All right. Uh, the case began last month with a string of late night pie disappearance. Oh yeah. Yeah. Only one pie. Yeah. Yeah. Just one pie. Yeah. It's, it's, it's, it's,

[00:11:52] it's like, it was a very good pie. It was the ER pie. Uh, and then the next one, uh, is a nitpick, um, local farmers markets and bakery vendors reported a chilling pattern. Freshly baked

[00:12:15] pies vanishing from secure locations in the wee hours. Uh, so I personally would prefer in the wee hours of the morning. Okay. What other wee hours are you aware of, sir? The wee hours of the afternoon? Yeah. Like that doesn't, like I've never, I've never heard it other than like, it's, it's, it's one. Yeah. Like I understand where you're coming from, but also like that is very, like

[00:12:41] that's very nitpicky and pedantic. Yeah. Cause it's like the starting hours of the day is what wee hours mean. Yeah. So sorry, but you're wrong. You're wrong. You're wrong. You're wrong. All right. And then the next one I have here, uh, this is not your average case, but we are

[00:13:07] committed to finding out what happened to Todd Winokur and holding those responsibly accountable. Yeah. I was going to let this one fly, but yeah, yeah. Yeah. It should be those responsible comma accountable. Yeah. Though technically it's dialogue. Yeah. So like it could, it's the way the character talks. It's not though. Cause this character is a professional police

[00:13:37] officer of some kind. That means nothing. Like you can be professional, but like still flub your words. That's impossible. Yeah, I know. Says the professional podcaster. Yeah. We may not be professional, like, like writers or professional, like editors, but we, we know things do a little bit. Speak for yourself, dude. We know something. We have

[00:14:06] like basic grade level. Yeah. You're right. All right. So that's it for my in this first section. All right. Gamer. I got nothing. Okay. Then we'll move on to, uh, S is for statements and I'll start with this one here. Forcing the Hogan's police department to consider investigative

[00:14:34] tactics beyond traditional methods. So I feel like it should actually say the Hogan's gap police department since afterward, like every time, like the Hogan's gap police department is mentioned, it does the full name of the town too. Maybe, but the police department is also ran by Hulk Hogan. Oh yeah. And you know, one could almost say they are Hogan's heroes. Nice. But yeah, no, I think it should be Hogan's gap police department, like H, HGPD.

[00:15:03] Mm-hmm. Moving on to the next one, detective Ramirez. Let's move, uh, let's move to the market pie theft. There have been multiple incident of pies disappearing often with no sign of forced entry. And I think that one should be incidents like plural incidences. Yeah. And then the next one from, and this is from an Elia reply. Um, then humanoid teachers have been very good with Adora.

[00:15:32] So I feel like it should be the humanoid teachers have been very good to Adora, like, uh, or even maybe like you've wanted to like have like that. There's like an accent, like to Elia's voice is like them humanoid teachers have been very good, but I think honestly it should be the not, not then humanoids. Yeah. Uh, and then the next one I have here, this is actually a twofer in this one. Um, that kind of, one of the things I have kind of covers a lot, a couple of things across the,

[00:16:00] the story, but, uh, detective Ramirez, I see. Thank you for your times, Ms. Eshburn. And with this one, it, it should be time, not think, uh, not times. Agreed. Um, but also, so this is something that came up throughout the story where I believe Dr. Or detective Ramirez kept referring to Ms. Eshburn as miss or Mrs. Like it kept kind of changing off and on, like throughout the story. And so, yeah, but like based on like what we know from earlier, like from a previous story,

[00:16:30] like I thought like Ms. Eshburn was a widow. So is she a widow or not? Like, cause her, cause her, her husband got, got gunned down. Oh yeah. By a Gatling gun. By a Gatling gun at the Whitaker house. That was awesome. I mean, horrible, but awesome. Yeah. So yeah. Like it was like, is, is she a missus or is she a miss in this instance? Like is he, is, is the, is the, is the husband still alive? No. Yeah. Probably not. So I feel like, I feel like it should be missed,

[00:16:56] especially since, uh, Mr. Has, uh, Mr. Eshburn is only just like mentioned like, and, and in a, in a, a statement that, uh, seems to insinuate his demise. So, uh, but that is all I have for S is for statements. Mikey, these stands for evil. Uh, I'm good. I mean, evil. Okay. Gamer. Uh, I'm in yellow. I have nothing. Okay. Rather my stuff was, was spoken about. Ah, okay. Um,

[00:17:25] moving on to S is for second interview. So I'll start with this one here. First off, we're had some reports about unusual, unusually large quantities of pies disappearing from various market stalls last night. So I feel like it should be, we've had some reports, not we're had some reports. Um, and then the next one here. Um, so over the course of the story, we get a mention of

[00:17:53] very, a lot of characters. Uh, one in K one in one in particular is named Yukia. Um, she's like, sort of like the goth girlfriend or ex-girlfriend of Todd. Um, and in this instance that I have here, uh, Ramirez under, uh, Ramirez underlined Yuria's name twice. Probably to like, are you sure that like he didn't like cross out the line, like have a cross outline in through Yuria and to like fix the

[00:18:19] name? Yeah. And then the next thing I have here, the phrase he had been jotting down subject witnessed lingered incomplete, an unfinished though on the page, the pen's motionless mirrored the paralysis of his mind. So there's a two for here. Um, uh, an unfinished thought on the page and the pen's

[00:18:48] motionlessness mirrored the paralysis of his mind. Oh, okay. Also, I do want to point something out here because, uh, like subject witnessed and a lot of the, the, the notes that, um, are the, the, the mentioned phrases and notes that are jotted down in Ramirez's notebook in the story are bolded, throughout the story. And that's really good. I like, I love that. That was a great touch.

[00:19:13] I'm so glad it wasn't underlined. No, I'm so glad it's not italixed. Yeah. Sorry. That's yeah. That's what it was. Yeah. I'm so glad it wasn't italixed. Yes. I would cry. Um, wait, that second part where you said like the pen's motionless, um, oh, it's motionness or it should, I think it should be motionlessness, not motionlessness. Yeah. Yeah. Um, and then my last one for,

[00:19:39] uh, second interview Ramirez scribbled paranoia, but kelp, his voice neutral, I think you want, but kept his voice neutral probably. Yeah. Unless he's a Kelpie, which is Hogan's gap, but we also know Ramirez is, uh, um, kind of genealogy later on in the story, but yes,

[00:20:02] that's all I got for, uh, for, for second interview, Mikey. All right. Let's see here. Usually I help out the hearth, but mom lets me out early with Adora along with a few other neighbor kids. So I feel like it needs an ad. So I help out at the hearth. I'm, I, I partially agree with you.

[00:20:31] Like, yeah, that, that would definitely work, but I do feel like, um, I help out the hearth. Like he, he helps out the, the cafe. Like I can kind of see in dialogue that like, you would say like, oh, I help out like the market. Like I help out of the shop kind of thing. So, but again, I, I'm not going to like say you're wrong necessarily in this one because like at the hearth also works. So yeah, for sure. Your, your change is not wrong, although not necessary,

[00:20:59] but I prefer your change. Yep. All right. That's the next one. Uh, oh, well, we went to a couple of, uh, no, so popular kick of back run stalls or sick of back. Chick of back. Anyway, back to back, sick of back. Who knows? So I feel like it should

[00:21:27] be not so popular as opposed to no. So popular. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I totally like missed that one. Yeah. Um, then the, uh, next one here, uh, besides Todd and Jarvis, there's Silas

[00:21:53] Thornwood tall, toothy blonde, always smirking like the Joker. So I feel like this should have a comma after the name and then, so, and then have a tall toothy blonde. Yeah. Or a colon maybe even like, cause it looks like his name is Silas Thornwood tall. Yeah. And then, and

[00:22:18] then toothy blonde is just another guy. Oh man. The guy, a kid named toothy at like who has like the last name blonde is so bad. Like his parents hated him a little bit. Don't even get me wrong. Don't even get me started with always smirking like the Joker. Well, that's another guy's name. Yeah.

[00:22:44] All right. And, uh, this next one, uh, I have here, I changed because it adds more clarity in my mind. So Ramirez pen paused, bully them, um, which I changed it to bullying. How? Hmm. Yeah.

[00:23:12] Because like we get a slight mention of, um, Todd and his crew bullying people, but then he says bully them, which doesn't make much sense. Whereas he's a police officer. So saying bullying, how was like, how are they bullying? I mean, he is saying that by repeating what

[00:23:35] he said, he's basically asking for clarification, just not in a, like a direct way. Like it gets the same point across, but I get, I'm, I'm honestly saying what I said before, I don't think it really has to be changed, but I prefer your change a hundred percent. Yeah. Agreed. It's like, if I said, like I ran over to cultist place and kicked him in the nuts. And then you're like, you kicked him in the nuts. Yeah. I kicked him in the nuts. He deserved it.

[00:24:07] But then, but that bear is like kicking him. How? Well, you see my shin bone swung up at a high velocity in between his legs and collided with his balls. I don't really like this story. That's a great story. I like how it is. All right.

[00:24:38] The next one here. Adora then got up out her crouch and was scanning the oblivious crowd. So I feel like up or out should be replaced with from. So Adora got up from her crouch. Yeah. Or out, out from her crouch as well. Also works. Yeah. Or out of her crouch.

[00:25:08] There needs something. Yeah. I mean, this is, this is also dialogue, but like it, like for like proper, like grammar. Yeah. Yeah. All right. And then the next one here, it's marking territory. So I feel like it should be, it was marking territory. Yeah. Or even like it's, or did you say like it was, or it's marking territory? It should.

[00:25:35] Well, I put it was, but yeah, because I was just it marking. Because like contraction wise, it's marking territory could also work. Yeah. All right. And then the next one here.

[00:25:57] So I feel like it either doesn't need day or you threw his tusks out like it was trash day. Not he was trash day. Yeah. Or like he was trash. Yeah. Mm-hmm. I think he was trash, which is better. Yeah. Just remove the day. Yeah. Hmm. Garbage day. I was just thinking.

[00:26:25] Like somebody's like, like, like he gets thrown out the window and just like some guys like, like out there with the guys like garbage day. Guns down this, this were more movie. What? [00:27:20] Usual stuff, you know, spreading rumors, gas, lighting, blackmail. Pretty sure gaslighting is one word, not two. Even though spell check says otherwise. But when I Google gaslighting, generally it's used as one word, not the space in between. Well, because it's like when it's like one word, it's like like a verb. Like you're gaslighting somebody. Mm-hmm. You're not referring to lights that are powered by gas. Yeah, exactly. Mm-hmm.

[00:27:51] And then this next one is a bit that I bring up a lot because it happens a lot. So here it goes. How long did you both watch him? Ramirez pressed. His voice low in intent. Sully frowned deeply, cracking a pistachio slowly. Not long. Maybe 20 minutes? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I have that in my actual thoughts. But yeah. 20 minutes is a long time to stare at someone.

[00:28:19] Like, I'm sorry. I almost spat out my liberty when I read that. Oh my God. Yeah. No. I say this a lot, but like you got to put on a timer. Put on a timer when you like are writing something and thinking about how long something is going to be and see how awkward it is. Like, even a solid five minutes at staring at someone would feel like an eternity. But 20 minutes? Hell no.

[00:28:46] This is like a kid saying this to a detective. And I'm surprised the detective response was like, really? 20 minutes. Are you sure about that? Yeah. You sure about that? Yeah. You sure about that? Also, yeah. Like, I think this is a record for the most ridiculous time length somebody waited or like held in a Curtisville story. Yeah. Not long. Maybe three days, you know. But geez.

[00:29:13] Like, if they were legit just watching him from out of sight to see what he's up to, intending to stalk him a bit, okay. But the way that it's brushed off as, oh, it wasn't long. I feel like a more realistic answer would be a couple of minutes. It's slightly vague. So it could be between one to five-ish minutes, though realistically a couple is two. But it would make more sense if he just said just a couple of minutes. Yeah.

[00:29:46] 20 minutes. My God. Yeah. 20 is. Wow. Time passes differently for dragons, apparently. Well, Hogan's gap. I mean, we know in certain areas in Hogan's gap, like sound acts differently. And so apparently time also moves differently in Hogan's gap. Mm-hmm. I mean, like maybe they saw him and they like went into a fugue state because they're like terrified. But like, it really didn't seem like it at that time. Yeah.

[00:30:15] They were just like, oh, there's Todd. Let's just stare at him for 20 minutes straight. Yeah, exactly. That's all I got for notes on this section. Okay. Then I suppose we move on to S is for street gossip. I've got nothing. Mikey. Well, this is time for me to break out my conjunction. Oh, Jesus Christ. All right. And next stop, conjunction junction. Doot doot.

[00:30:38] And it's this very description that has police looking closely at Adora, a longtime companion of Miss Eshburden's teenage son, Sully. It's not every day we have a suspected pie-thieving puka on the loose or a missing elf child. And yes, we are fact-checking the local lore.

[00:31:05] And yes, we will be seeking clarification from a local expert on the proper handling of potentially pie-stealing pukas. But she also couldn't account for Adora's exact whereabouts on Halloween night. And what specifically can you tell us about Adora? Adora.

[00:31:32] And you're aware that puka are sometimes associated with, shall we say, unpredictable behavior. But I've never seen anything from Adora that I'd consider malicious. But Sully has assured that she never stole anything, nor did she ever play hooky. Adora.

[00:32:02] And you believe, Sully? It was a normal Halloween night. And there was no indication that they had any contact with Todd Winokur that night. And she had a scarf on, a bright red one. It's odd, but she says it gets rather chilly in the earth woods where they live.

[00:32:31] And did you observe anything else unusual that night? It's always like that on Halloween, so it isn't a new experience. It's just, I always find it rather odd. It's just around the corner from here, though it's closed today, obviously with Mondays being extremely low traffic days.

[00:33:01] And you've been running it for how long? It's been a lot of work, but I love it. But I see odd shifts all the time, so I suppose it might just be me. It's hard to describe, but I've never actually encountered anything like that here.

[00:33:25] And Adora has been nothing but friendly and kind. It's possible, Miss Eshburn, that they may not be entirely aware. It's Wrenchester Middle School. But to be honest, Adora is more popular than Sully. It's awful. But we appreciate your cooperation. It's awful that she's more popular than Sully.

[00:33:55] It's such a crime. How dare she? My son's such a precious boy. He deserves to be just as popular as that puka. Yeah. Throw her under the bus. She did it. Yeah. It was supposed to be a character from this CGI movie. I forget what it's called. And only to Todd, like... Oh, hi there, Todd.

[00:34:25] Cute costume. That kind of thing. And you didn't see him after that. And their names? And Jasper Finchley. The Griffin Kid. He was wearing fake dragon wings, and he kept flapping them in Adora's face. And Mara Kelpie. She had seaweed hair extensions dripping everywhere. And Lyra Nixie.

[00:34:55] And Ukai Grimshaw. And Ukai was just... Watching him? And Ukai witnessed the chocolate fountain demolition? And... And Sylvia Vesper. And let's not forget the classic dick moves, tripping them in the crowded hallway,

[00:35:22] or an elbow jab sending their books flying. But his mom's the mayor. And... But Sylvia... Sylvia... She looked kind of annoyed when Todd was bouncing around in that rabbit suit. But... We didn't see that particular stall, so we just turned down High Street. Or maybe just catching his breath.

[00:35:52] And it was also really quiet. But I didn't think he looked bushed. He looked frozen. And then... It echoed over the bridge, like coins rattling in a tin can. But he didn't twitch. And that's when I noticed it too.

[00:36:19] It slid off the suit like oil. And Todd? Todd? But... The footsteps kept pace. And... That laugh started back up again. And the bridge? And... The shadow under the street lamp? It stayed. And... Was Todd back under the street light? And...

[00:36:46] What was Adora's reaction to all of this? It... It... Didn't even look like a shadow of a bunny suit. And... How long did you and Adora watch it? But... Maybe eight to ten minutes? It... Didn't twitch. Didn't fade. It's... Moving. It... Was sliding across the pavement... Toward the hill's base.

[00:37:16] And... It wasn't just sliding. It... Pulsed. But this time... It's coming. But... Nobody looked up. It's still coming, Sully. And then... We both smelled it. But... Sharp. It's here. But... Odora was trembling like a leaf in a storm. Her tail coiled tight against her back. And...

Oh... That would have been a really cool twist at the end... That's kind of where I thought it was going into...

[02:11:33] And then like the end of the story... We get like... This whole like revelation that like... Somebody was... Had poisoned a bunch of the kids... Uh... Cause uh... Cause of this ghoul gummy candy... That was in... Todd and his... His friend group's like... Bags of candy... And I was like... I was kind of expecting it to be more like... Of the like... Somebody's got... More people are going missing... Or acting weird... In town around Sully... Uh... Again insinuating that like... This thing's still out there... Like whatever it is that like...

The... What happened... Like... Afterward... And then the next... And hopefully... Again... This is my hope... This is like... Because like... From a writing point of view... Like...
