[00:00:00] Oh, hello and welcome to Aldente Wigamotis. I'm Review Cultist.

[00:00:22] I'm Mikey, the Eastern Trivial. And I'm the Gamer in Yellow. in the story where it's like oh no oh no but uh yeah so um uh let's uh let's should start with the rundown featuring the Katie as we eventually find out her name. It didn't take too long.

[00:03:00] It took 10 par- I have a whole thing in my notes about it.

[00:03:02] It took 10 paragraphs for us to get her name.

[00:03:04] Alright.

[00:03:05] It took too long.

[00:03:06] It took a way too long. in this time that Katie became friends with a local boy, Jamie, and the two 12 year olds spent a lot of time outdoors and such, forming a friendship and awkwardly flirting as well. It was also at this time that Katie learned of a local legend, a lost sister town to that of Middleborough, that was crucified in the main hall of the church amidst rotting pews. As Katie is beginning to panic, especially after the back way they had just come through collapsed and they couldn't feel like it has been that long for them. Katie and her parents leave sooner than expected, and that's the last she hears from Jamie, or Middleborough for that matter.

[00:07:01] It seems that in the next few years, no out of the way let's dive into everyone tolerance the grammar inquisitions at this point. I do have a few so I'm gonna start with this one here.

[00:08:25] I guess this is technically I'll tell you. Geez, Katie. Jamie picked up his bike and started walking down the bike path. I grabbed mine and followed him. So this is what I said earlier. This is like 10 or so paragraphs in and we are just now knowing N by pillars for also I want to say what the fuck is a chancel but I'm not gonna do that one because it's not in the story so I learned of learning church words yeah but yeah so I

[00:11:04] learned a new word today nave is apparently the the space where the pews how are their deer in here? Why are they made of wind? Well, why are they farting all the time? Actually, they'd be windows, so they'd be winning all the time. Oh, God. Winning! Tiger blood. But I'll move on to the next thing I have here. I didn't know you were claustrophobic. At least, that's what I think Jamie said. I remember the horror better. Maybe put it after horror. I remember the horror better, or the horror I felt better as I stared at the hole in the floor. Just because where better is placed, it is kind of confusing what the intent is in this sentence.

[00:13:43] So, then the next one here.

[00:14:42] They're living for exposure, not pay. You can tell them to get the fuck out.

[00:14:44] That's true.

[00:14:45] Yeah.

[00:14:46] It's the same damn thing.

[00:14:47] You can just remove them from the premises.

[00:14:50] Yeah.

[00:14:51] You're fired.

[00:14:53] Kabam!

[00:14:54] But yeah, so all seriousness though, I think it should be, it should probably be internal.

[00:15:04] So it's like, all I could feel was my own internal descent into madness. And next stop, Conjunction Junction! It was two stories tall and at the end of a very lonely cul-de-sac. It was pretty boring, as expected, until we heard some kid ask an employee about the lost

[00:16:20] town. of dad's new store and some of our neighbors. But legends don't just come from nowhere. So do you want to go out to the woods one last time? It was the awkward first kiss of two it and seemed to have clean manmade lines. It's a long way off more minute here had me on the precipice of a panic attack, something I hadn't experienced in over a its profile, I noticed it had horns as well. It's not my fault you cracked me on the that there was a scientific explanation for this. It was on the trapdoor too. Because, Jamie, all those doors are open now. But Wow. So I got some notes here that I've been talking about. First off, the very beginning, it very much felt like there's no real mention of the woods. So like, but there's a lot of mention of like the suburb that they were, or like the cul-de-sac and

[00:24:22] like the neighborhood they were in.

[00:24:23] So it's like, so this whole thing takes place in. I was like, why is he not talking? And for those unaware, Mikey grabs sentences throughout the story that start with words that they probably shouldn't.

[00:25:40] Like it's answer butts because there's always better words to use.

[00:25:43] Indeed.

[00:25:44] And when he puts them together in a string of a story, sometimes comes with hilarious

[00:25:47] results. So it would go, my dad was assigned to a store in Pennsylvania, period. It was a longer assignment, comma, but because it was summertime as well, comma, he decided to take my mom and I with him. I actually alter yours a little bit further and have that it was summertime 22, uh, 20, 22, it was, it was summertime 2002, like, or in, in summertime of 2002,

[00:27:04] like, like have the summertime part be at the beginning so that you cut that,

[00:28:02] surprisingly all intact

[00:28:04] Intact is meant to be one word not to

[00:28:07] It's not intact. It's intact

[00:28:10] and then my next one is

[00:28:14] basically in regards to the demon statue I

[00:28:19] feel like it could use some more description because it's such an important part of the story and

[00:28:22] Like the only part of

[00:28:26] This creature that we get a good because I Find that like as a cheapskate when it comes to like Lovecraftian horror and like demons and stuff and like horror and stuff but It is a trope That that people fall into for like

[00:29:44] Horrific monsters like oh, it's so horrifying. I't get any other descriptions because again, it's burned into her mind, but they can't personally bring it down to words For reasons. Yeah, I got I got a bit in my actual thoughts on that but

[00:31:04] Yeah, but yeah, that's pretty much the pinnamigrammar

[00:32:04] Nobody knows, nobody even remembers the name of the town. It's like a rite of passage or something

[00:32:08] for kids to go looking for it.

[00:32:10] I'm just gonna look at my long list of old game ideas

[00:32:15] that I've either run or want to run in the past,

[00:32:18] specifically from the Grumblehammer 1920s campaigns

[00:32:22] of One Less Die, our sister podcast.

[00:33:25] But I digress, I'll move on to the next thing I have. Jamie and I hung out inside the house and played my N64 while we flirted pretty outrageously.

[00:33:32] There had been an unspoken sort of mutual attraction throughout the summer that no one

[00:33:36] had had the guts to act on.

[00:33:39] Since I was moving home in five days below like I was expecting Jamie to be killed and then like Katie being the only one that makes out the forest and then by the end of the story she I'm glad that they actually like subverted that kind of like thing that they were like kind of building in the story and

[00:36:02] But when Jamie checked his watch it had been three hours

[00:36:07] All right, I'm just gonna check a map here

[00:36:15] Yep, this is on this is this could technically be on the Appalachian Trail going through, Pennsylvania. Yeah, they are so fucking screwed

[00:36:23] Just like going out into the woods losing time this is some Blair Witch Project bullshit do is on her side like she's transformed all of a sudden. Yeah exactly but no I think it's uh when I broke the last window on my side I turned back around to survey the chapel disappointed that the lighting wasn't much better the room itself seemed to repel light okay getting some some allen wake vibes here with the darkness in the chapel but that really doesn't go anywhere

[00:38:43] a few weeks ago that were going into the woods to look for things like just yeah sitting in the pews like it's brought up and then like never

[00:38:49] mentioned again so I guess those kids like are fine or they got because I

[00:38:53] don't think the creature could do could affect the outside of the church until

[00:38:57] they were until they act up these kids accidentally the creature did anything

[00:39:01] with those kids it would have deleted them from existence no one would know that they're there So the quote is Jamie. I think we need to leave I said in a low voice Jamie stopped and looked up looked up seeming to remember I was there. Are you kidding? This is what you came This is what you came for. We have we have to bring home evidence all of all of it It's going to it's going to be dark in a half hour It's already hard to see in here. Duh. That's why I'm using a flash

[00:40:25] light

[00:41:22] You're not wrong. Yeah, like it is interesting because like I and this is something that happens a lot in stories like

[00:41:28] We're like the the dynamic shifts like the the main character

[00:41:34] Katie like is the one that wants to go out into the woods and their friend is hesitant but the the narrate the character tricks their

[00:41:40] friend and or

[00:41:41] persuades or like review cultist cultist vibe as well honestly. I mean, I mean, you're not wrong. Yeah. I mean, I feel like I would be of two minds. I feel like I would probably also have similar like note vibes that Katie has. But you would also want to have pictures

[00:43:01] taken with a creature.

[00:43:02] Yeah, but I probably wouldn't touch it.

[00:43:04] That's the thing, I think I also, so something that is brought up in the story, like while I was reading it and like we're getting like these like accusatory eyes from the photos in the back of, in the back office and then from the Jesus statue here. I mean, you guys, both of you guys have, you've seen the Disney's Hunchback and Notre Dame.

[00:44:22] Yes.

[00:44:24] Time ago.

[00:44:25] Yeah, fair. have them like kind of, they don't like move, but they, they, they, they, um, they definitely look like they're now just look at all of them are just like now looking down at this one character in the scene. And that's kind of what I, the, the sort of the, the creepy judging eye intent I think I got from like when I was reading this story. But, uh, I'll

[00:45:43] move on to the next thing I have here.. To put it mildly, it was some sort of demon. It towered over us and as such I could only see the bottom of its jaw from where I was. It was looking directly ahead of it. I really hate how that's that's phrased because I like I tripped over that the last time I

[00:47:04] read this story. You thought of saying I was looking ahead of it? Yeah exactly But when you use your special ability in the game to see what's underneath the surface of things, you find these sanity-blasting Eldritch statues where the Angel statues are. I mean, spoilers for the game. It is revealed that the Church of Redemption are not worshiping God or the God. They're worshiping C'thuga, a fire vampire god from the C'thulu mythos.

[00:49:26] kind of what it sounds like. It's basically like, I think it's where we get the word Fahrenheit from or like something similar. It's a very similar sounding word. Anyway, yeah, so I was kind of

[00:49:32] getting vibes of like the Church of Redemption when they came in down here and like she was like

[00:49:36] freaking out over the statue because like it kind of reminded me of like, oh, this is like nice kind

[00:49:41] of like, or this like strange, creepy, dilapidated it's like if you look back and you see him you'll see like the this hell knight of this knight about to like like just open its giant maw to like uh to bite this marine's head off and then you look it looks and sees that you've spotted it and it just throws like pushes the guy away and goes after you I remember that being like a scene in doom

[00:51:00] three and all that's all I could think of with this part like in the list of SCPs. It's it's double sculpture. So yeah. But yeah, no, I could buy it like it's a little bit. It doesn't immediately kill you when you look away from it. But no. I wonder what triggered it though.

[00:52:20] Like it they were like intently staring at the whole time and

[00:52:25] it wasn't moving.

[00:52:25] And then as soon as they both dropped their lights, they had insert gargoyle theme song here yeah cuz it's like a demonic form is like so it's a gargoyle like maybe it's just like it's it's a it's some kind of like evil gargoyle that's been slumbering underneath the church they actually discovered the rookery of like an old of an old gargoyle clan that like there's

[00:53:42] just like one left maybe the reason it woke up was because they they they don't So again, it makes sense in the context of the story, like that, like she's trying to remember Jamie and so that, but that's like, I can only imagine like what her parents think of like, why do you have that police report right over your bed? Like when they're going, when her mom comes in to like get drop off some like laundry or think it's true, are you the crazy one or do you just live in a crazy world? What I don't get is how come everyone forgets about the town and everything, but she doesn't?

[00:56:23] She was at ground zero with this creature. to another person and then once that person gets killed then it starts going after you eventually like you basically it's like You can only delay the inevitable. Yeah, it's like the worst game of hot potato because like I can I remember like she in that movie she like She avoided it for a little while by like just having sex with a couple of people and then like having and like just random

[00:57:44] randos that she hooked up with They go to a very analog style theater. The movie theater they go to is a very like pay cash and use and buy tickets to go to like this. And it's like an old school like matinee kind of theater with a physical projection and stuff like that. Yeah.

[00:59:00] Per projector and stuff like that.

[00:59:01] So it's like, yeah, it was very like,

[00:59:03] and I remember like watching it,

[00:59:04] it's like, is this supposed to be in the 80s?

[00:59:06] Or it's supposed to be now?

[00:59:07] Oh, it's just like the lamp lights. And you just have that song starts playing, you know you're in for a bad time. Yeah. Because you're like looking back over your shoulder. I totally haven't done this before, guys. No, never. I'm not talking about it. This does not sound like the voice of experience at all. It's just your own. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. God, that was such a good movie, though.

[01:00:23] Yeah, I will defend that movie to my last breath, honestly.

[01:00:26] Good.

[01:00:28] But yes, we can move on now. mixed with the weeping angels and the silence from Doctor Who. Pretty much. And actually, thinking on it a little bit harder, Gamer in Yellow, doesn't this kind of sound like a false hydra situation? I don't know what you're talking about. What's a false hydra? I don't know.

[01:01:41] I was unaware I've ran into a false hydra multiple times in D&D sessions and forgot what it was every single time.

[01:01:46] Yeah, that if the Dalek Emperor wait, wait a minute The Dalek Emperor this creature having very similar themes to like the weeping angel and the silence from dr. Who? Hmm, I wonder who what the inspiration for this monster was you about to ask what the inspiration was

[01:03:02] Hmm. No, no, no

[01:04:02] But yeah, that's the end of my actual thoughts. So I do have a point to continue here, though.

[01:04:05] Sure. It said at the end that she's uploading this Internet

[01:04:10] because she doesn't want it to be like she wants it to be there forever

[01:04:14] because nothing gets deleted off the Internet, right?

[01:04:16] Yeah. Can't she just Google the frickin town she was just in?

[01:04:22] She I think she tried.

[01:04:23] And that means her putting on the Internet doesn't mean anything

[01:04:26] because the Internet's already been wiped of that. being a Walmart employee, like maybe as like a manager or like a supervisor and having to do some training in a store like a couple of like towns over and then coming back and then it's like, yeah, so, it's like, where have you been for the last like few weeks? Like I was in this town at a store

[01:05:40] and like they name off the, they know the number

[01:05:42] like enough in their memory.

[01:05:44] And then he's like, there's no store with that number

[01:05:47] to it, and then posts it again, and then deletes it, and then posts another one.

[01:07:01] But all three parts are a different. It was the seventies.

[01:08:23] We are a totally different generation.

[01:08:24] We have sat nav.

[01:08:26] Sat nav. that's that now okay then yeah yeah drop the ball there yeah no that that's definitely a it's not necessarily a plot hole but it does feet it's get it's itching closer to the end or two it's inching very close to the edge of being a plot hole yeah cuz like why bring it up like that don't do it like I'm okay with them not having it but say why yeah the plot ice is melting in the

[01:09:44] inventory section where it's listening to gun in the first act. Checkoff's gun. Yeah, checkoff, thank you, yes. Yeah, checkoff's gun. It's like checkoff's gun. If you introduce a gun at the beginning of the first act, you better use it at some point,

[01:11:00] or it better come back at some point in the rest of the story.

[01:11:02] Yes.

[01:11:04] Well, this one, it's like we're introducing this

[01:11:06] and we're never going to use it.

[01:11:08] Yeah, it was remember like she'd oh

[01:12:25] Yes, and then they ran I got to look, it's weird. And it does say the place seemed to repel light, but that might just be an exaggeration. Because if they were up there and they used the flashlight, and the flashlight was barely working, so then they're like, OK, let's try to get some more light in. That would make more sense.

[01:13:40] And then that would kind of make us feel like maybe there's

[01:13:44] a supernatural darkness going on up here. Yes, this is in regards to describing the Jesus statue. The details of his face were so incredibly minute and perfect. He had the same accusing eyes as portraits in the pastor's office. He seemed to be staring directly at me and I could tell Jamie felt the same, though he was across the room from me.

[01:15:01] The statue stare awarded me an edge. I was hearing it It was from their viewpoint at the back of the church because they came in from the back Yeah, so I assumed that the front meant the front of the building aka the front doors So like the statue of Jesus was like beside or over the front door

[01:16:21] However, this is due to my own ignorance since googling it the quote-unquote front of the chapel is where the podium is

[01:17:24] The way that it was describing it, this is what it felt like. I kind of have a rough idea of there's a podium and then on either side or maybe just one

[01:17:28] side there's a door to the back.

[01:17:30] So they come out that door to the back, but they enter the front?

[01:17:34] Yeah, and that's what I was about to say.

[01:17:35] I was about to correct you, BS Smartass.

[01:17:37] I was like, don't you mean they went through the front door?

[01:17:41] The door to the front?

[01:17:43] Yeah.

[01:17:44] No, it's so topsy turvy.

[01:17:46] The wording of that is horrible. Okay, so the okay, so a chancel court so cuz like that was for what I saw when I was looking up the description for a nave So the chancel is the part of a church containing the altar and seats for the clergy and choir So it's at the front the chancel is at the front on the inside of a church in front

[01:19:03] No, not the out front the in front that's why. I mean it's just like offhand It's because she has chronic panic attacks and she hasn't had it in over a year. Yeah. The fact that she can say I haven't had it over a year sounds like it's chronic. It is sort of unnecessary and it just kind of like asks some more questions that the story isn't

[01:20:22] going to answer. Yeah like again if it was brought and so I think that was just like that whole like I hadn't had a panic attack in for like a year or some of that. I think that was honestly just put there as like some flavor text and like wasn't meant to be like looked at any at all but I can see what you mean like it's it's supposed

[01:21:43] to just be like it asks you it asks us place kind of thing. Yeah. And then there we go. I mean, she was freaking out at that point and she was barely able to respond. Yeah. Because like she wasn't having a panic attack because of claustrophobia. That's just something that Jamie speculated to her. Yes. Like, yeah. But she is, does have some form of chronic panic attacks of some kind.

[01:23:03] Because she says I haven't had one in over a year.

[01:23:05] When's the last time you had a panic attack?

[01:23:07] Actually a couple of weeks ago. Am I the asshole? Was I the asshole the whole time? And the answer is... So what's your next thing, Game Master? Actually, I'm done. Oh, okay, good. Good. Okay, so on to final thoughts then.

[01:24:25] I loved this.

[01:24:26] I'm just gonna go word here. It's like, move over diabolical demoniacal. What's with this Spanish bullshit diablocal?

[01:25:41] Fuck that.

[01:25:42] We're gonna do, we're gonna say it like English with demon demoniacal. I hope that this doesn't like completely like jump the shark or like fall or trip over its feet and ruins this initial like buildup because this was really fun for me to read so Mikey these stands for evil

[01:27:05] Well, it was a interesting story it was I think it's supposed to be like basically just like a shortening of like burrow. So, mm-hmm Yeah, so it's Interesting the whole vanishing side of things but the the thing is that

[01:28:27] There should be more of actually like how is she remembering traumatized by this. So okay, yeah, mental scarring. And so I probably sticks with her a lot more. I was also going to say we it could also be like it could be trauma. It could also be her bond forged with Jamie over that summer. That is keeping her memory, like keeping her memory going of the situation. Like, because like, like, they like they did have a like

[01:29:44] a childhood.

[01:29:45] Well, I wasn't gonna go like that extreme.. Yeah Exactly. Yeah, that that's what I'm thinking is is probably it's a very reasonable You see it a lot in real life as well Like in like real life situations where you like they they were friends and then this thing happened

[01:31:03] And now they no longer allowed to see each other

[01:32:01] I know. I'm sorry, Mike. We have stuff that just gets on a frame.

[01:32:04] Yeah, that's yeah.

[01:32:05] Like these train tracks here.

[01:32:07] Oh, my God.

[01:32:08] They're going to the woods.

[01:32:09] I can't I can't stop walking.

[01:32:12] Sorry.

[01:32:13] What was I going to say?

[01:32:14] I'm sorry.

[01:32:16] No, honestly, I forgot before you start saying shit.

[01:32:21] Shit.

[01:32:22] Oh, no, you're forgetting.

[01:32:24] I'm forgetting.

[01:32:25] All right. So let's let like okay this man is dead. This kid is going to die in this story but he didn't. Yeah I said that early on in my actual thoughts actually like I the story kept having these foreshadows where I was like okay so Jamie's not because it was like um I'm glad that I went down

[01:33:40] to the pit even though I was terrified about it because at least Jamie didn't have to see up tannins. Yes. Mikey, your your final verdict. We apologize. My final verdict is it's good as is hopefully there's more elaborate on the next one. So I'm going to recommend this. Okay. Gamer.

[01:35:04] Yeah, so as you guys could probably tell, all of us gushing over this, I was a kid my dad traveled back in the company. It just keeps going. I'll just really the first like couple of times. It's the entire first paragraph. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Godness. But yeah, um, all in all I like the story. There were some bits about it that didn't make sense like the the darkness imprisoning

[01:36:23] them and um all that they could see is obviouslying but like I do remember like us really liking the start of brassica and then as it when we finally like By the time we were finished like some of the stuff by the end was like a little like ridiculous

[01:37:43] But maybe that was because of the skeevy stuff. Maybe I'm just like half remembering that like our

[01:38:45] But I guess yeah, so full recommendation cool

[01:38:50] Yeah, so yeah, I guess that's been this week's episode

[01:38:56] I think you animously check out the lost town of deep wood on reddit no sleep
